Faced with these 26 cards how will you bring home 9 tricks playing in 3NT?
You’re sitting South and your task is to make 3NT on the queen of hearts lead. The first decision is whether to duck it or win the ace.
The Auction & Lead give good clues
West showed six hearts with the opening bid. And then led the queen of hearts. Assuming standard leads West will hold QJ9872 of hearts and East will hold K5 of hearts. Duck the first round to 1. block the suit, start to separate West from East communication wise.

If you want to make the opponents help you, you must get them to a point where they have no choice, so you need to strip them of the suits you don’t want them to play. Suppose you continued with the ace of spades, queen then five to the king, West pitching a heart, eventually tabling the queen of clubs, taken by West’s ace.
Here’s the situation with dummy still to play to the sixth trick:
While discarding a diamond looks obvious because nobody likes to throw winners (and even worse, create a winner for the opponents by doing so), you must foresee the possible development: whether West plays a heart or a diamond, East will win and eventually play a spade, locking you in dummy. Goodbye to your hopes. If instead you rid yourself of the jack of spades, a winning but annoying card, you execute a decisive move. On the following round West plays back a heart and East, after winning the king, cashes the ten of spades, defensive trick number three, while West pitches a heart.
Suppose you wisely threw a diamond from hand and the ten of hearts from dummy. East continues with a small club. Here’s the position:
